As a fan of Nina Simone who never had the opportunity to see her in concert, I cherish her albums. Shattered dreams of becoming a major concert pianist, Nina poured her heart, hurtful and joyful, into her music, captivating her audience. Some believe that there is a fine line between genius and insanity. While Nina certainly was not insane, she was much troubled, displaying outbursts of anger/frustration and inappropriate behavior and pushing those who cared about her away. She searched for the fulfillment but found it unattainable despite her musical career, becoming an icon of the civil rights movement and relationships with men and women who offered guidance, comfort, direction and sometimes hurtful abuse. Her spirit was strong and deep as evidenced by her ability to move those who listened to her fantastic renditions of familiar songs and new material. I found myself wishing very much that she could have found more of what she needed and some joy. Her spirit is so strong and her music so powerful that she will live on forever. May she truly RIP. I have been a fan of Nina for many years, and this book gave me insight into her mind.
